Postgraduate Programme

PhD Study

Every year we take on postgraduate students looking to study for a PhD in the fields of star and planet formation. To see a more in-depth list of current topics of interest to the group at Leeds see our research page. Successful candidates will work as part of the astrophysics group on cutting edge research with supervision from a member of academic staff. PhD students will learn to become independent researchers over the course of their studies alongside opportunities to teach and to travel to conferences relevant to the field. STFC funded studentships are available to eligible UK and non-UK citizens which pay a stipend for living expenses and university fees at the UK rate. In addition there are other University Scholarships available for which eligible students are encouraged to apply. Deadlines for some funding routes can be very early and so applicants are advised get in contact with potential supervisors ASAP. We also welcome enquiries from international students with external funding and and from self-funded applicants.

MSc Masters by Research

We also offer a one year MSc Masters by Research course. There is no funding available for this from within the University, so applicants must be able to support themselves. Interested parties are welcome to contact any of the staff members in the Astrophysics Group. Normally a first degree with a 2(i) qualification or equivalent is required for this, though mitigating circumstances may be taken into account.

Apply

The application form and further details of the application process can be found on the University's postgraduate admissions pages, where information on financial support can also be found. Please note the application form is generic for the University of Leeds. In particular, you do not need to add your own research proposal in Section L, but rather should indicate which of the listed projects you are interested in. If you wish to suggest a project of your own you must first seek approval of a supervisor within the Astrophysics Group at Leeds. Any PhD applicant to the University of Leeds must have a first degree with a 2(i) qualification or equivalent (approximately 60%).
